Cultural Work Experience
Our Travel & Tourism and Art & Design students had the opportunity to complete two weeks work experience at the Oriental Museum and Palace Green Library. Students assisted with tours at Durham Castle, and created visual pieces for celebrations, such as Chinese New Year. They also helped with art exhibitions, such as the Marvels of China.
Ross Wilkinson, from the Oriental Museum and Palace Green Library, said “We have really enjoyed having students from New College Durham conduct their work experience with us at the Museum Service of Culture (Durham University). Each group of students brought a new set of skills and enthusiasm, and really got involved with the museum family. They created unique pieces of artwork for community festivals, such as Holi 2017, and engaged with our youngest visitors here at the museum service. Not only has this given the students a chance to develop their employability skills, and utilise existing talents and enthusiasm, they have integrated into the teaching team. We are looking forward to hosting next year’s students, they will have a lot to live up to!’
Both Travel & Tourism and Art & Design students have really enjoyed their experience. Sergia Iranzo chose to study Level 3 Art & Design at New College Durham after his previous studies in Spain. Sergio said “Before starting my work experience, I hadn’t really made many friends and I didn’t really know what to expect as I hadn’t done anything like it in Spain. I really enjoyed experiencing real work. I learnt a lot and was lucky enough to get a real insight into some of Durham’s visitor’s attractions for free! They were really interested in my illustration work, and I spent some time producing artwork to be used in the Museum.”
