Hair student wins silver in national competition
A talented hairdressing student from New College Durham has been crowned UK silver medallist at the national final of the AHT (Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) competition.
17-year-old Ellis Swan competed against 20 other students from across the whole of the UK in the Ladies Commercial Cut and Blow Dry category. The prestigious national competition took place this month at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. Ellis was awarded second place for his short graduated cut, which he incorporated a creative colour to enhance the finish.
Ellis, from Stanhope, who is studying Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing at New College Durham, said:
“I was so happy when they announced I had won silver. The standard was very high and I didn’t expect it at all. It will be great for my future career.”
Ellis secured his place in the final following his bronze medal win at the North East heat of the AHT competition, which took place at the Federation Brewery Gateshead in February.
Sam Nolan, Ellis’ tutor at New College Durham, said:
“Ellis is a fantastic student. He has given 100% from day one and has shown tremendous commitment and dedication, which has paid off. To do competitions you have to be prepared to put the time and effort in and Ellis went the extra mile by attending additional sessions and staying behind after class to work on his model. Ellis has amazing drive and is so passionate about the hairdressing industry. I feel his talent will take him from strength to strength. He is an absolute pleasure to teach.”
A team of hair and beauty students from New College Durham came fifth in the Total Team Look Presentation category, also at the national final.
Skills competition are an opportunity for students to showcase their skills to their peers and employers. It also gives students a confidence boost and the experience of working under pressure while developing their employability skills.
