Business students embark on international business venture
Students from New College Durham are visiting Cámarabilbao University Business School in Bilbao this March to represent the College in the Trade Mission business event. The students will be the only UK College at the event representing and promoting two UK businesses.
This is a fantastic opportunity for the nine students involved to develop their business acumen, by promoting a product or service from their home country in a new market. There are 106 students attending and 35 companies from all over Europe being represented.
The students from New College Durham carried out market research in Bilbao and Spain to understand the target market. The companies they have selected are leading British saw manufacturer, SageTech Machinery, and Darlington based, family-run ice cream parlour, Archer’s Ice Cream.
Whilst in Bilbao, the students will visit the businesses they contacted prior to the event, to obtain introductions for their chosen North East company to follow up. The students will also visit the Bilbao Chamber of Commerce and the British Consulate.
Neil White, Business Management Curriculum Manager, said: “This is an excellent attribute for the students to put on their CVs. They are working with real-life businesses to provide problem solving solutions. It is a great opportunity for the students to not only visit Bilbao, but meet other businesses and develop their networking and influencing skills.”
20 year-old BA (Hons) top-up Management student, Michael Lynn, said: “Throughout my five years at New College Durham, I have gained an abundance of skills to aid me in achieving my goal to become a Royal Marines Officer. I have thoroughly enjoyed working on this project as I have been able to utilise my marketing and leadership skills to promote a British company in Europe, despite the challenges of Brexit.”
BA (Hons) top-up Management student, Harris Cameron, joined New College Durham to study Level 3 Business and has progressed within the College to a bachelor’s degree. He commented: “I have received continuous support whilst studying at New College Durham, and have gained the confidence and drive to succeed and chase my dreams. Having amazing business opportunities, such as this one, has inspired me to start researching and developing my business plan.”
The Trade Mission event takes place between 11 - 16 March 2018.
