New College Durham strike again with NECL Premier League Win

The Men’s Football Development Centre at New College Durham celebrated becoming the U19 North East College Premier League Champions for 2017/2018.

After eight months of closely contested and competitive matches, the Men’s Football Development Centre team successfully defeated Hartlepool College of Further Education, 3-2, in an away game on 9 May. The team was awarded the title of North East College Premier League Champions.

New College Durham demonstrated their customary fast, fluent and controlled football. Over the years, this style of playing football has become effortless for the students who are trained and coached by the College’s Football Development Centre.

The students continuously work well as a team, which played to their advantage in this crucial away game. The victory was sealed as a result of a brace from Toby Longstaff, coming from two crosses from Harry Stoker, and a goal from our top scorer Andrei Ardelean, assisted from a pass from Arron Hodgson. Andrei’s goal increased his tally for the season to a very impressive 41, with a Cup Final still to come.

Man of the match was Kieron Richardson, for his defensive performance. Kieron won tackle after tackle, to prevent Hartlepool from grabbing an equaliser.

Ronnie Thompson, Head Coach for the Football Development Centre at New College Durham, said: “Everyone at New College Durham is so proud of the players and their achievements this season. The College’s Football Development Centre is growing year after year, in terms of numbers and quality, and this success is yet another example of how New College Durham is not only one of the top educational providers in the region but also a College where students can now play top class football too.”

Alongside New College Durham’s success in the NECL Premier League, the team have also recently won the Regional 7 v 7 tournament held at Maiden Castle. Through winning this tournament, New College Durham will represent the region in the National Finals to be held in London on 17 June 2018.
