New College Durham Shortlisted for a National Innovation Award
Following a year of innovation and diligence, New College Durham has been shortlisted for the Enterprising Learning Provider of the Year 2018 award. Representatives of the College will attend the annual Celebrating Enterprise awards event at the Houses of Parliament, on Wednesday 2 May, where the winners will be announced.
The awards recognise enterprising excellence in learners, organisations and employers. Those nominated exceed the SFEDI and Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (IOEE) expectations and standards, by meeting and going beyond complex learner requirements.
New College Durham is being recognised for their partnership with Business Durham, which supports the development of a business strategy to attract innovative businesses and organisations to the County. This was achieved through the development of a new Level 5 module titled; Innovation, Idea Generation and Enterprise which was validated and integrated into current and new foundation degree provision at the College in September 2016.
Last summer, FdA in Business and Management students, who completed the new foundation degree module, were the first to be presented with the IOEE Award in Creativity and Innovation award; a complementary award to their degree certificate.
In addition, the shortlisting recognises the College is also initiating the delivery of an IOEE innovation qualification to County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service staff this month, as part of their drive to empower staff and develop intrapreneurship from within. The aim is for all staff within the organisation to compete the qualification on a rolling programme.
Students are encouraged to take part in a range of innovation projects, including Trade Missions to European countries, such as Hungary and Spain. Events such as the Trade Mission and International Busiweek allow students to work with European partners, to develop innovative solutions that help local businesses grown and improve.
Mo Dixon, Vice Principal of Higher Education and Inclusion, said: “We are delighted to have been nominated for the Enterprising Learning Provider of the Year award as it acknowledges the valuable opportunities and innovation strategies implemented by New College Durham, that contribute towards providing a high quality learner experience.”
