Describe your academic experience:

After leaving school I started at New College Durham as an Electronic Engineering apprentice.  After 10 years in the electronics industry, I changed my career and studied HNC Construction. During this time I studied City and Guilds Computer Aided Design Level 3 at New College Durham. When I completed my HNC I returned to top-up to the HND in Construction to complete my studies and graduate. When I started teaching at New College Durham I studied the Post Compulsory Education and Training then BA (Hons) Education.  I have also studied the Assessors certificate for NVQ assessing and am currently studying for the Internal Verification award to verify NVQ assessments.

Describe your experience working in industry/the workplace:

Since I left school I have worked in various industries in various roles. I started as a Trainee Engineer in electronic engineering, moving onto Repair Technician and Electronics Engineer before moving into the construction and civil engineering industry. In the Construction industry, I worked for a local construction and civil engineering company as trainee Site Engineer on multi-million-pound construction and civil engineering projects, before moving onto cost clerking and site management for major Frameworks in Civil Engineering.

Describe your role at New College Durham:

Since I started at New College Durham my role is Study Programme Leader for the BTEC Level 3 Construction and Civil Engineering. I also teach on the HNC and HND Construction programmes and assess NVQ Level 3 Construction apprenticeships.

Why did you decide to teach at New College Durham?

After working in various industries during my career I decided to go into teaching and give back some of my knowledge and experience to the new generation of students and to enthuse students to do well in their career.

What is the best part of your job?

I enjoy teaching the students the latest up-to-date information and technology in the industry. The light bulb moment in a classroom where the students are inspired by the information in the classroom.

What are your research areas/interests?

I have researched Surveying instruments and latest advanced technology in the industry. I am also interested in Design and Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Tell us about any current/recent projects:

I have worked in Site Surveying and find this part of the industry very interesting including the design and development of construction site projects.

What has been your best moment at New College Durham?

During my time at New College Durham I have experienced many high points including graduating the students at HND level in Construction after teaching them for five years at the college, celebrating students achieving highest grades and achieving a grade one lesson observation.

What inspires you?

I am passionate about the construction and civil engineering industry and seeing the industry grow. I enjoy delivering latest and up-to-date construction and civil engineering information and the advancement in the technology used in the industry. I have also been inspired by my father who worked at New College Durham for many years and had a successful long career as Head of School and Senior Lecturer in Construction and Civil Engineering
