Course: Level 3 Media
Previous school: Moorside Community Technology College
Katie knew our vocational media course would give her the skills she needed to follow her chosen career path. She was very positive about working in the media industry.
“I chose to study media at New College Durham because I was confident I wanted to pursue a career in the creative industry. The course not only taught me everything I needed to know to get me started in this rapidly evolving industry, it gave me the confidence to explore my creativity.
“The tutors went above and beyond to support me throughout the course. I formed strong relationships with both my tutors and my peers. This made for a relaxed atmosphere and a perfect learning environment. I never felt silly asking questions if I didn’t understand something!
“We had access to a range of fantastic, professional equipment and resources. Getting hands-on experience with intimidating equipment, such as cameras and soundboards, was easy. The comfortable environment definitely made all the difference.
“Upon completing the course, I felt fully equipped to undertake a bachelor’s degree at The Northern Film School in Leeds. I used this opportunity to participate in a study programme in California for two semesters, where I fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting real-life movie sets in LA. I was at an immediate advantage during my university course, as I already knew how to use editing and camera software, thanks to studying at New College Durham.
“After finishing my degree, I worked as a runner on various TV shows. I progressed to work as a videographer, creating promotional videos for clients, such as South Bank London. I went on to work full-time at the Production Guild of Great Britain for a year, where I planned and attended many prestigious events for award winning producers and production staff in the UK.
“I currently work as a Production Assistant in Vancouver, where the film industry is booming! So far, I’ve been lucky enough to meet and work with the likes of Johnny Depp, Dwayne Johnson and Jeff Bridges, some of the very heroes that ignited my love for film in the first place. I am certain I would not be where I am today without the support, opportunities and encouragement I received on my course at New College Durham.”
