Billie Aken-Tyers

Course: Performing Arts (Drama)

Previous school: Consett Academy

Billie is very enthusiastic about her experience at New College Durham and described it as enriching, inspiring and life-changing. The performing arts course helped to prepare Billie for drama school in New York.

She said:

“The best thing about the course was the teaching curriculum and the tutors. I was so ahead of the others at drama school, which was down to everything I had learned at New College Durham.

“One of the Performing Arts Lecturers from New College Durham were in the audience of a performance I was involved in at school and found me after the show - she suggested I joined her course! After the week induction I had fallen in love with the place. The campus was a wonderful environment to study in - modern, bright and positive.

“The course itself was all encompassing so I spent a lot of my downtime preparing for the next day at college. I was treated like an adult, which held me accountable for my own level of work. I never felt like I was still in school. When I wasn’t at college I was in a show, or taking dance classes or singing.

“I am forever grateful to the staff at New College Durham – they shaped who I am as an artist. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them”

Billie progressed to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and then joined the New York Academy Company. She is an accomplished actor and singer and is now working as Artistic Director of the Ophelia Theater in New York. She has plans to direct her own play and has a role in a new musical.
