Dane Wilkinson

Course: Level 3 Creative Media Production

Previous school: Framwellgate School Durham

Dane described his time at New College Durham as life-changing and inspiring.  He was the college’s LGBT Officer and, following his studies, he became Students’ Union President for a year.

He said:

“While in school, some of my family and friends studied at New College Durham. It was hearing about their experiences that inspired me to come too. I think the best thing about New College Durham is the support, not only from lecturers, but from Personal Learning Coaches, ASC and the Students' Union. Throughout my time at college I had a lot of struggles in my life. Their support helped me to stay in education and without that I'm not certain I would have made it into university or any of the projects I'm working on.

“All of my lecturers had experience in the areas they taught, and it showed throughout the course. Their passion and enthusiasm for the subject helped to keep the students interested and passionate about it too.

“I just wish that I was still a student after the redevelopment and the new Media Centre. It would have been an amazing resource for me to have had access to!”

Dane is now studying BA (Hons) Media Production at The University of Sunderland and also volunteers as Vice-Chair of Durham Pride UK.
