Course: FdA Roots & Popular Music
Previous school: St Leonard's Catholic School
Robbie studied Level 3 Music at New College Durham after leaving school and has progressed to Foundation Degree Roots and Popular Music. He said the staff were inspirational and made the subject interesting.
“The reason I decided to study at New College Durham was to continue my music journey. During my interview for the course I was introduced to the team behind the course and department. This then gave me the assurance to pursue higher education.
“I stayed at New College Durham as the staff are really inspirational and really know their subject. They make it interesting. The quality of students on the course is also excellent so I knew I would be surrounded by like-minded people.
“The course is the perfect mix of theory and practical. Most of us are from a practical music background and so the opportunity to develop this further is really appealing. The music facilities are excellent. There’s a recording studio with the latest technology that we are using for our final major project.
“I decided to come to New College Durham rather than university as the way the sessions are delivered in college are more suited to my style of learning and developing. I also like the flexibility of studying a foundation degree with an option to top-up. There is amazing support at the college. The staff are extremely supportive at course level and the central support services are very good.
“The quality of the work we produce is a very high standard. Our performances are very professional and are always raising our profile as professional musicians. I have played at the Gala Theatre in Durham, and I was also invited to perform for delegates in Malta through the college. This was a wonderful experience.
“New College Durham is a great place to study, not only at Level 3 but also higher education, it opens a lot of doors for you. The relationship between the staff and students are second to none. The tutors themselves are great - they have amazing talents which when they work alongside you, gives you a real sense of professionalism. My musicianship and playing have developed so much since I began my foundation degree.”
Robbie is currently in a professional band, who are starting to build a national profile, and is hoping to progress to BA (Hons) Music top-up at New College Durham.
