Mark said New College Durham was the best college in his region so it was a bonus it was close to home.
He said:
“I started my journey at New College Durham after wanting to change careers. I had been a chef for 15 years but wanted to make a difference. The only way I could become a social worker was to get back into education – New College Durham is the best in the region.
“After achieving Functional Skills maths and English I progressed to study the Access to Higher Education diploma in Humanities at the college. I had offers from Northumbria University, Sunderland University and Teesside University when I applied to study for a full honours degree in social work but I chose New College Durham as I knew I would receive outstanding support from the social work team after working with them on my Access to HE course. I was familiar with the campus and saw no need for change as I had already had such a positive experience.
“I felt wanted as a student on the social work degree, I liked the small class sizes and the team were available whenever I needed them, I was able to book tutorial times that suited me. Their support was impartial and provided an alternative viewpoint – I really cannot find words to praise and thank them enough.
“Admittedly, I found some of the subjects difficult to understand, but the tutors made lessons an enjoyable experience and found ways of making difficult subjects engaging and fun to learn. It was clear they were enthusiastic about the profession and this helped motivate me to learn.
“In August, I started work as a Family Support Worker with the Young People’s Service for Durham County Council. Once I confirm my degree, I can register with Social Work England as a Social Worker and will continue to work for Durham County Council in this role.
“Overall, my experience at New College Dirham has been life-changing and rewarding. I couldn’t have done it without the phenomenal support I receive over the five years!”
