#LoveOurColleges Mocktail Hour
Our Preparing for Independence students showcase their creativity by developing recipes for their own inspired mocktail for the AoC to share as part of Love Our Colleges Week.
Colin Galley, Lecturer at New College Durham and WorldSkills Unsung Hero nominee, explains:
“We got involved with the AoC’s Colleges Week as we wanted to give our students the opportunity to share their skills and talents. As part of their study programme, we work with them to develop their independence and employability skills. This project has allowed the students to express why they enjoy coming into college, through the innovative art of making mocktails for Love Our Colleges Week. All of the students involved think it is amazing that their ideas and creations are going to be used by the AoC so other people can try their mocktails.”
The Preparing for Independence programme is part of the Foundation Studies offer for SEND students who need further support in developing their individual skills whilst preparing for adulthood. Our team of dedicated lecturers work with the students to help them to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that promote independence for learning and life. The curriculum is also designed to encourage students to engage with their local community and develop healthy lifestyles. Specialist staff also work with the students to continue to develop their maths and English skills, and the students are offered the opportunity to take part in numerous WorldSkills competitions organised by the College.
Alyson Shields, Head of Inclusion, comments:
“Competitions are a central theme to our Foundation Studies curriculum and are a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their work ready skills, confidence and resilience. The students always put in their all and are a credit to the College.”
