Welding Apprentice

Dyer Engineering wants to create engineering futures in the Northeast, and we do this in several ways; long-term commercial contracts, investing in plant and machinery and investing in our people, especially our Apprentice Programme.

As an Apprentice Welder, you will work under the guidance and supervision of experienced welders and learn the skills required to fabricate and weld metal components and structures according to specifications. You will utilise your skills in metalworking, cutting, welding, and assembly to produce high-quality products. Your tasks will involve interpreting drawings, operating fabrication machinery, and performing welding techniques. Attention to detail, precision, and adherence to safety protocols are essential for this role.

Apprentices are expected to; not get things right the first time, have a willingness to learn and ask questions when they are unsure. All Dyer Engineering people should always take a consultative and constructive approach to their interactions and be a positive role model by conducting themselves in a manner consistent with the Company’s Values and SST Behaviours. We hope that apprentices can recognise this behaviour and can copy it. It starts with being kind and helping the person next to you.

Duties, including but not limited to:

  • Interpretating specifications and technical drawings to understand fabrication requirements.
  • Cutting, shaping, and bending metal components using manual and automated fabrication equipment such as saws, shears, brakes, and CNC machines.
  • Welding metal parts and structures using various welding techniques, including MIG (Metal Inert Gas), TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), and stick welding.
  • Conducting fit-up and alignment of fabricated parts to ensure accurate assembly.
  • Performing welding operations to join and secure metal components, ensuring strength, durability, and integrity.
  • Operating and maintaining fabrication tools and equipment, ensuring they are in proper working condition.
  • Inspecting fabricated products and welds for quality and compliance with specifications.
  • Conducting necessary repairs or modifications to fabricated structures as required.
  • Collaborating with team members, including engineers, fabricators, and welders, to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of projects.
  • Maintaining accurate records of fabrication and welding activities, including materials used, time spent, and project progress.
  • Participate in quality control activities to ensure the accuracy and precision of welded parts.
  • Learn to use precision measuring instruments, such as vernier callipers, micrometres, and gauges, to inspect finished products.
  • Identify and report any deviations from specifications or quality issues to senior machinists or supervisors.
