We are delighted with our new collaborative and integrated learning space for technical and higher education, aka T.H.E Hub.

The extension provides state-of-the-art specialist facilities so we can deliver higher and technical level skills qualifications. T.H.E Hub features 23 new teaching spaces, including an immersive suite, an early years foundation stage nursery, a sensory room, a hospital ward, a dental suite, an opticians, an esports arena, cyber security facilities, specialist IT classrooms and science laboratories. The building also has several modern breakout spaces for students to work and socialise.

Designed by Ryder Architecture and delivered by Esh Construction, the development was procured via the Procure Partnerships Framework and delivered in partnership with Turner & Townsend, Jasper Kerr Consulting Engineers, TGA Consulting Engineers and Howarth Litchfield.

Grant Watson, Construction Manager at Esh Construction, said:

“We are proud to have delivered this fantastic new learning space for New College Durham. We worked hard to provide high quality and modern facilities whilst maximising the social and economic benefits for the local area. Through our commitment, 91% of the operatives onsite were North East residents.”

Esh created 11 new apprenticeship opportunities, 90 days of T-Level industry placements and five-day work placements for two plumbing students.

Andy Broadbent, Principal and CEO of New College Durham, commented:

“We are thrilled to be in T.H.E Hub. This state-of-the-art facility embodies our mission to empower our students with the skills and knowledge they need for a successful future. It’s not just a building; it’s a gateway to careers.”

T-Level Health student, Luca, shared his initial response to T.H.E Hub:

“There’s a lot of space, it looks like it’ll be easier to study in here. There’s a lot more new technology and I think it’ll help with my future and progressing with my course; I’m thinking of going to university or maybe an apprenticeship.”
