This dance course will develop your technical ability in various dance styles, and will build your confidence and performance techniques and skills to prepare you for performing live to a large audience.
Entry Criteria
You will hold:
- Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including a grade 4 or above in a performing arts GCSE - such as drama or dance.
- Level 2 Performing Arts or equivalent.
- GCSE maths and English at grade 4 or above is preferred but not essential.
Additional Costs
All students will be expected to have the following specialist equipment:
- Tap shoes: £10-£30
- Ballet Shoes: £10-£15
- Ballet leotard and tight: £10-£20

Study Aims
- Learn and develop technical ability in various dance styles.
- Learn about influential dance practitioners for different styles of dance and their impact on the genre.
- Develop performance techniques and skills working towards performing live to a large audience.
- Use critical analysis to self-assess and reflect on personal skills and development.
Modules Studied
You will study four modules across two years:[1[Exploring Performance Styles ~ Creating Performance Material ~ Performing as a Dancer as part of an ensemble ~ The Performing Arts Industry]1] In the second year, you will refine your skills, produce a personal project, create material for self-promotion and networking, undertake a defined creative or administrative role, use creative collaboration to develop a project and produce a collaborative project.
Teaching and Assessment
You will take part in a range of different learning and assessments styles to fulfill your potential. Every practical unit contains some written work.Some assessments will be tutor led and others will be solo projects. You will have access to support from our Personal Learning Coaches (PLCs) and will receive one-to-one tutorials with your tutor.

Maths and English
Maths and English will be embedded as part of the study programme.
Placement
You will be required to complete a work placement to gain relevant industry experience. Previous placements include Beamish Museum, TinArts, Urban Dance Garage, Razzmatazz Stage School and The Train to Christmas Town. You will be encouraged to source your own placements where possible. Support is given from our Work Placement Officer.
You could progress to study FdA Performing Arts at New College Durham, or a relevant degree course at university or dance school.
