BA (Hons) Design

“I decided to study at New College Durham because I knew people that had studied there, and they had a great experience – it was a bonus that it was close to home.

Jacob had heard good things about New College Durham from his friends.

He said:

The course was flexible, which appealed to me, and I was excited about being provided with opportunities to work with clients on live briefs.

“I received constant support from not just my tutors and lecturers but other students too. This swayed my decision to stay to top-up my foundation degree in graphic design to a full bachelors degree as I knew I would do well. I knew I could reach out to anyone at any time - this kind of exceptional support really took a massive weight off my shoulders.

“The facilities at the College were crucial to helping me be successful on the course as having access to professional equipment, such as the photography studio, allowed me to produce a higher standard of work while doing my studies. The best thing about the course was having the freedom to gain knowledge in areas of design that I might not have gotten otherwise until three or four years working in industry.

“My experience at New College Durham was stimulating and allowed me to grow as a designer but also as an individual. I did two work placements and I learnt a lot from each, including the type of environment I would like to work in when pursuing my career. I have developed my own design company, AlderHam, which I intend to build into a well-known design studio, based in the North East. I would love to work with businesses of varying scales so I am taking the plunge to go to networking events to meet potential clients and pitching the business for programmes such as Durham City Incubator. I will also be developing my website, using the skills I learnt on my course.”
