FdA Events Management
“I love everything about New College Durham! It gave me the confidence and enthusiasm to do well. My tutors were passionate about teaching and they were always there to offer support whenever you needed it."
Sharnie came to New College Durham later in the academic year as part of our Choices Plus programme. She quickly progressed from Level 2 Travel and Tourism to Level 3 and then secured a place on our FdA Events Management programme.
She said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the foundation degree in events management - I gained skills that I still use daily now. My favourite part was planning a live event for Help for Heroes. It was a fantastic night and raised over £1,000.
"I completed the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award with New College Durham. I couldn't fault the tutors that assisted me, they were fantastic. I also had the amazing opportunity to study in Malta for two months. This sparked my interest in working abroad so, after graduating, I applied to work in Madrid for a month.
"On returning from Madrid, I got a job as an Airport Representative with Thomas Cook working in Ibiza for nine months. I ran excursions and helped the resort representatives in the hotels.
"I applied for a Wedding Coordinator Job at the Assembly Rooms in Newcastle when I returned from Ibiza as I have always wanted to be a wedding coordinator – this was the perfect opportunity. My time at college definitely helped me to prepare for the interview as I was confident when standing up to deliver my presentation in front of the panel. In this role I used the skills and knowledge I gained during my work placement in Malta with the College.
“I worked for the Assembly Rooms for two years before it sadly closed due to the owners retiring. During this time, I planned several wedding fairs and I absolutely loved it. Now I am working at the beautiful Acklam Hall as a Wedding and Events Coordinator. I know that without New College Durham I wouldn’t have gained the knowledge and experiences to get where I am today, in a job I love, in a popular extraordinary building planning someone’s big day. It fills me with joy!”
