Apprenticeships

This course is free to apprentices. Small companies may need to make a contribution towards training costs, large companies could pay through the apprenticeship levy, if they have funds available

This advanced apprenticeship programme aims to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to pursue a career in Civil Engineering.

You will attend college one day per week to study modules such as construction principles, design, technology, and structural mechanics. You will also earn while you learn in the workplace with your employer in the Civil Engineering industry.

You require employment with a company who wish for you to complete this apprenticeship before applying.

Entry Criteria

The minimum academic entry criteria to the course are:

  • At least five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C)
  • Or a related BTEC qualification at Level 2.

In addition to the above, you will be required to have Maths and English Language qualifications at a minimum of Level 2 before commencement of the course. If you wish to pursue a career in Civil Engineering, a GCSE grade 6/B in Maths is recommended.

If you intend to continue studying at a higher level, you should check the entry requirements of the individual training provider to confirm suitability, as this will determine acceptance onto higher education programmes. Civil Engineering programmes often require a GCSE grade 6/B in maths, and a Merit or higher in mathematical based units.

You will be invited to meet with the course tutor. Please bring evidence of relevant qualifications and proof of ID, e.g. passport or driving license or birth certificate.

Study Aims

The purpose of this apprenticeship is to develop your skills as a professional, self-reflecting individual.

You will be prepared to meet the demands of employers in the Civil Engineering sector and adapt to an ever-changing world.

Modules Studied

You will build a portfolio of the following mandatory units:

  • Construction Principles
  • Construction Design
  • Construction Technology
  • Health and Safety in Construction
  • Site Engineering for Construction
  • Further Mathematics for Construction
  • Construction in Civil Engineering.

And the following optional units (subject to change):

  • Surveying in Construction
  • Management of a Construction Project
  • Principles and Applications of Structural Mechanics

All modules are to be confirmed at the start of the academic year.

You will also be assessed against the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standard to create your portfolio that demonstrates and provides evidence to support your learning.

Times of Delivery

Your timetabled lessons will be on either a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, from 9am-6pm.

Teaching and Assessment

Each individual unit will use different teaching and learning strategies, including:

  • Practical work
  • Tests

You will be assessed through written reports and external exams.

End Point Assessment

For the work-based element of the course, you will record evidence of learning in a portfolio which will be mapped against the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours that are set out in the apprenticeship standard. You will be assessed using methods such as:

  • Professional Discussions
  • Direct Observations
  • Question & Answer Sessions
  • Mock Assessments

The final assessment for the qualification is an End Point Assessment (EPA) which must be passed to achieve the full qualification. The Institution of Civil Engineers will carry out this assessment.

Placement

You will be expected to work within the industry and will attend college on a day release basis.
