This course is designed to give an overview of some of the main concepts within the field of counselling to clarify any misconceptions. It is for anyone interested in developing listening skills, gaining an understanding of the counselling process and developing personal insights and self-awareness. The course will not teach you to be a counsellor, but it will give you useful skills which can be applied in your everyday life and may help you decide whether or not you want to train as a counsellor.
The teaching staff delivering on this course are qualified counsellors in current clinical practice.

Study Aims

- Triad work.
Teaching and Assessment
You will take part in a variety of seminar and lecture activities, including group work and skills practice. Assessment will involve:
- Ongoing personal learning journals
- Topical Discussions
- Observed counselling practice sessions
- Self and peer assessment sessions.
This qualification will provide you with an opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately. It will be a useful progression route for those interested in furthering their study or widening their work role. You could progress to study the following route at New College Durham:
