This ESOL course is for learners looking to develop their skills and confidence in using English in a variety of different situations. Studying alongside people from all over the world, you will develop your ability to express your own ideas and emotions & communicate fluently and accurately.
We will assess your level in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Following this we will provide you with a tailored timetable to match your individual needs.
Entry Criteria
This course is designed for people whose first language is not English. There are no academic entry requirements but the offer of a place is dependent on the outcome of the initial interview and assessment. The applicant's language skills must fall within the range of Beginner to Advanced.
Additional Costs
You will be required to purchase a coursebook which comes at the cost of £30.
What are the next steps?
Applicants will need to attend an Advice and Guidance session with a member of the course team in order to book an assessment.
Assessment takes approximately one hour and is in the form of a written test and an interview.
Study Aims
The course aims to provide you with the English and academic skills needed for life, work and study in the UK. It also aims to support you with integration into UK life and to equip you with language skills to enable you to make a contribution to your community.
You will develop an understanding of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and learn about different varieties of English (for example, formal and informal speech and writing). Students develop their accuracy and their fluency in using English in different situations and have practice talking about different topics of interest.
Modules Studied
Much of the course content at each level is based around common situations that you will face in the UK, however, parts of the course may be dictated by the needs of the individual and the group. Teachers work with students to set individual targets for learning so that the course is able to meet the needs and requirements of each individual taking part.
Students take part in work experience, visit local places of interest and learn about British Culture and history. They also receive advice and guidance about what their next steps may be.
All students must work towards Level 2 Maths, unless they possess an equivalent qualification from their home countries.
Teaching and Assessment
Regular assessments take place throughout the course. Progress is measured against each individual's starting point. There is also an end of year exam which assesses your level of English. You will gain an ESOL qualification in Skills for Life, and a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification in Maths.
Industry Links
Throughout the course, we aim to help you develop the skills and knowledge required for the workplace. You can expect additional talks and workshops relating to employability, some of which are given by local employers.
Maths and English
You will have maths classes alongside your ESOL class, and will work towards a Functional Skills qualification in maths.
Placement
You will be encouraged to take part in work experience to develop your skills, however, it is recognised that some ESOL students do not have the English skills required to operate independently in the workplace. All students will take part in college-based work experience and volunteering, and tutors will work with individuals to design an appropriate programme of work-based skills.
What else?
Most students progress between levels in one year, however, as everyone learns languages at different speeds, it is possible to move more quickly or take more time.
