This course provides learners with a basic introduction to the decorating trade.As a painter and decorator, no two jobs are exactly the same.
You will need to work with lots of different tools and materials and will need to know your products well.You will study handling and storing materials, using working platforms, protecting working areas, preparing surfaces for decorating, and applying decorating materials.
You will be continually assessed in practical skills and theory.
Entry Criteria
No formal requirements for entry to this course. A good level of English and maths is beneficial.
Additional Costs
You will need to purchase a bib, brace, overalls and safety footwear for practical sessions.

Study Aims
This course aims to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to work in construction. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment. You will have the opportunity to build many transferable skills, both theoretical and practical, as well as a sound knowledge and understanding of key processes and techniques used.

Health and Safety ~ Knowledge of Technical Information, Quantities and Communication with Others ~ Knowledge of Construction Technology ~ Erect and Dismantle Access Equipment and Working Platform ~ Prepare Common Surface Types for Decoration ~ Apply Basic Paint Systems by Brush and Roller ~ Apply Foundation and Plain Papers ~ Produce Standard Decorative Finishes.
Times of Delivery
This course is typically delivered three days a week between 8.45am and 5pm, depending on your Maths and English requirements.

Teaching and Assessment
You will be assessed on each unit through online multiple-choice exams and practical based synoptic tests.
All assessments are designed to mirror real life work tasks in the industry.
You will be assigned a tutor to support your learning throughout the course. You will also have access to a Personal Learning Coach (PLC) for additional support.

A number of Project Managers from high profile North East construction companies visit the College, to discuss employment opportunities and the construction industry. We have many strong links with many companies, including: Tolent Living ~ Persimmons Homes ~ Sir Robert McAlpine ~ Robertsons Construction ~ Ladycraft Ltd ~ Durham City Builders ~ Scott Builders ~ Beamish Museum. The study programme is designed to allow you to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter regional and national competitions, and will gain hands-on experience with a work placement.
Placement
At Level 1, you will engage in set sessions to improve your employability skills within your personal development sessions. You will work alongside the work placement team to secure a work placement.

You could progress to Level 2 Painting and Decorating at New College Durham, or an apprenticeship.
Alternatively, you could progress into employment within the Painting and Decorating sector.
