Age 16-18

FREE (If meet residency criteria and not enrolled at another educational institution).

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course will be FREE. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips.

Age 19+

If you are aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course could be free dependant on the level of the course and your eligibility criteria. This course will provide you with a basic understanding of brickwork and will help you gain the knowledge and skills to prepare you for further study.You will practice essential building methods and basic bricklaying skills, including carrying out cavity walling.

You will learn how to set out and build structures up to damp course level, and construct straight forward brick/ block walls.

Entry Criteria

Entry requirements for this course are Grade 2 GCSE in maths and English or equivalent. Access to all Level 1 courses depend on a successful interview and your maths and English assessment result.

Additional Costs

You will need safety footwear for practical sessions in our industry standard brick workshop. Failure to wear safety equipment will result in student being refused entry to workshop. The college will provide opportunity to purchase these at the start of term.

What are the next steps?

You will meet with one of our construction team and once your place on the course is confirmed, we will stay in touch throughout the year. Your meeting will include a presentation about the College and course, a one to one chat with a tutor and a tour of the facilities.

The meeting will take place at NCD Construction Centre of Excellence, Promotion House, Littleburn Industrial Estate Durham, Co Durham, DH7 8HJ.

Study Aims

This course aims to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to work in construction. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment.

Teaching and Assessment

We are committed to supporting every one of our students with an extensive range of support services to ensure you have the opportunity to get the very best out of your experience with us.You will be allocated a personal tutor who will guide you through your studies and try to help with any problems you may encounter. In the Technology department, your course leader will also act as your personal tutor. You will answer knowledge based questions at the end of each unit.

Placement

Our brick workshop reflects the best of industry standards and will give you experience of the real working practices and conditions you will face in the construction sector.Students are required to undertake an employability programme and/or relevant work experience. We work in partnership with local employers to provide you with hands-on experience. Some of the employers we work with are our former students who have established their own businesses.
