This course provides learners with a broad knowledge of construction crafts in order to help you make decisions about which craft you wish to pursue a career in.
You will undertake training and assessment in maintenance skills, such as plastering, tiling, painting, and building block/brick walls. Developing such a range of skills will prepare you for progression into further study in a specialised area within construction.
Entry Criteria
Grade 2 or above in maths and English is required.
Additional Costs
You will need safety footwear for practical sessions in our industry standard workshops. You will be refused access to the workshops if you fail to bring your safety equipment. You will have the opportunity to purchase these at the start of term at approximately £10.00.
Additional costs may apply for enrichment activities.

Study Aims
This course aims to provide you with an introduction to multi-craft construction activities. It will prepare you for a career in your chosen craft. You will have the opportunity to build many transferable skills, both theoretical and practical, as well as a sound knowledge and understanding of key processes and techniques used.
Modules Studied
You will undertake training and assessment in the following maintenance skills:
- Plastering walls
- Applying paint to substrates
- Building block walls
- Constructing woodworking joints
- Fitting architrave and skirting
- Tiling walls
- Building brick walls
- Fitting ironmongery to an internal door
- Preparing substrates for painting and decorating
- Developing customer relationships.
Teaching and Assessment
Teaching is both classroom and workshop based and is designed to cover a wide range of learning styles.
You will be assessed using the following methods:
- Oral questioning
- Assignments
- Written tests
- Observation of practical performance.
You will also have access to a Personal Learning Coach (PLC) for support with any further issues.

The study programme is designed to allow you to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter regional and national competition.
Placement
At Level 1, you will engage in set sessions that aim to improve your employability skills. To do so, you will need to register.
