This course is designed to provide learners with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills, and prepare them for work in a multi-skilled environment.
The course covers a range of construction crafts dealing with maintenance and repair. You will study areas such as building methods and construction technology; masonry repairs; painting, decorating and associated repairs; plastering and repairs; plumbing repairs; carpentry and joinery repairs; and safe working practices.
Entry Criteria
You will hold a Level 1 qualification in a construction trade, and be skilled in carrying out practical tasks. Basic literacy and numeracy skills are required.
Additional Costs
You will need safety footwear for practical sessions in our industry standard brick workshop. Failure to wear safety equipment will result in student being refused entry to workshop. The college will provide opportunity to purchase these at the start of term - approximate cost £10.00.
Additional costs may apply for enrichment activities.

Your meeting will include a presentation about the College and course, a one to one chat with a tutor and a tour of the facilities.
Study Aims

Teaching and Assessment
Teaching is both classroom and workshop based and designed to cover a wide range of learning styles. You will be assessed using the following methods:
- Oral questioning
- Assignments
- Written tests
- Observation of practical performance.
You will also have access to a Personal Learning Coach (PLC) for support with any further issues.

Placement
Learners will be encouraged to undertake relevant work placement to gain valuable hands-on experience practicing their skills in a real working environment.
The study programme is designed to allow students to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter internal and external construction competitions.
You could progress to a specialised trade course at New College Durham such as painting and decorating, carpentry and joinery, plumbing or construction.
