This course provides learners with the perfect introduction to electrical installation. You will develop the essential skills and knowledge required for further study or employment.You will work in our fully equipped workshops to build an understanding of a range of electrical systems and how to carry out various tasks, such as safe working practices, site preparation, fabrication techniques, wiring and terminations, and environmental and sustainability measures.
Entry Criteria
You will hold a minimum grade 3 (D) in GCSE maths and English.
Additional Costs
You will be required to purchase PPE at a cost of £20, including safety boots and protective work wear. You must provide your own stationery and scientific calculator. Learners are also encouraged to purchase a personal copy of the IET Onsite Guide.

Study Aims
This course provides learners with the perfect opportunity to develop the core skills and knowledge required for pursuing a career in electrical installation. It will prepare you for progression onto our Level 2 Electrical Installation study programme.

- Fundamental Safe Working Practices
- Environmental and Sustainability Measures in Domestic Dwellings
- Site Preparation for Working in the Construction Industry
- Fabrication Techniques for Electrical Installation
- Electrical Installation Wiring and Terminations
- Electrical Science and Technology.
Teaching and Assessment
You will undertake practical and knowledge based activities under tutor supervision. Feedback will be given in weekly tutorial sessions. This is an opportunity for you to discuss your progress and target grades. You will be encouraged to stretch and challenge yourself to achieve the highest levels.
Industry Links
You will have the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities, such as visiting building developments to observe current working techniques in industry. Guest speakers will also be invited into college to deliver seminars on industry developments and professional updates.
Placement
Learners who demonstrate acceptable progress and a commitment to the programme will be given the opportunity to attend a work placement with a relevant employer subject to availability. This is a perfect opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience, and develop their skills, in a real working environment.
You could progress to Level 2 Electrical Installation at New College Durham, or an intermediate apprenticeship to gain experience of working in the sector.
