This course will provide you with a basic understanding of motor vehicle and will help you gain the knowledge and skills to prepare you for further study.You will experience practical training in our new, well-equipped workshops where you will gain both hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge.You will study light vehicles, which will include topics such as vehicle systems, remove and refit components, fault diagnosis, and basic routine maintenance.
Entry Criteria
No formal requirements for entry to this course. A good level of English and maths is beneficial.
Additional Costs
To take part in optional enrichment activities, such as classic car and bike shows, there will be a small fee.

Times of Delivery
Timetables will vary depending on student qualifications on entry. If GCSE Maths and English have been achieved this will reduce the hours in college but will include a work placement at a local garage.

Teaching and Assessment
This practical course makes full use of the college’s industry standard motor vehicle workshop - sessions will be a combination of workshop and classroom based. You will be encouraged to study independently, whether be on site or from home using the Schoology portal. Feedback will be given in weekly tutorial sessions. This is an opportunity for you to discuss your progress and target grades. Assessments are planned throughout the academic year and target grades will be negotiated to ensure you stretch and challenge yourself to achieve the highest grade.
Industry Links
The units covered directly link to the current apprenticeship standards to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to progress, and be a successful contributor to an employer’s business. A variety of enrichment activities will be organised for throughout the year, including guest speakers and visits to industry.
Placement
You will be required to undertake 37 hours of work placement – placements will have to be vetted by the college before the placement can be confirmed. The work placement will directly link to employability sessions and enhance the knowledge and skills needed to complete the course.
You could progress to Level 2 Motor Vehicle at New College Durham, or an intermediate apprenticeship to gain experience of working in the sector.
