Gain an in-depth understanding of the systems found within a vehicle. Learn how to replace simple parts, solve complex faults, and use diagnostic methods and equipment. This light vehicle apprenticeship will provide you with the key skills and knowledge required to work as a motor vehicle technician, such as servicing, repairing and diagnosing complex faults on cars and vans.
Entry Criteria
You must hold a Level 2 apprenticeship framework or apprenticeship standard in light vehicle automotive. You must also achieve maths and English at Level 2.
You must source a suitable apprenticeship placement which can offer you the required evidence in order to enter end point assessment gateway.
What are the next steps?
You will be have an interview with the Apprenticeship team. As part of your interview you will carry out a number of tasks which will help us assess your suitability for the course. Please bring evidence of relevant qualifications and proof of ID, e.g. passport or driving license or birth certificate.
Study Aims
A motor vehicle technician services and repairs light vehicles, such as cars and vans, and works either in dealerships that focus on a particular manufacturer, or for an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles. Individual employers will set the selection criteria for the programme. To do well, technicians will have an interest in motor vehicles as well as a capacity for mechanical reasoning and good spatial awareness.As an apprentice, you will complete 20% off-the-job training during your contracted hours, to ensure you develop a wide range of skills and knowledge using diagnostic methods and specialist equipment through a staged learning programme.

Teaching and Assessment
Lessons will combine classroom-based sessions as well as practical sessions in our state-of-the-art automotive workshops.Our workshops are fully equipped with specialist equipment, including electric and hybrid training equipment, the latest diagnostic equipment that can be used on multiple vehicle systems, including 4-wheel alignment. You will develop the knowledge and skills needed to support you to become a valued employee, allowing you to make positive contributions to business success and support growth in the local and regional economy. For this standard, the employer and provider will need to sign a declaration to agree the apprentice shows evidence of the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours as set out in the standard. In addition, you must have evidence of an F-Gas certificate, this can be any certificate that complies with current F-Gas regulations. As part of our End Point Assessment (EPA) service, City & Guilds will check all gateway evidence before the EPA event so you can have the confidence that you are ready for EPA.
End Point Assessment
The final assessment for the qualification is an End Point Assessment (EPA) which must be passed to achieve the full qualification.
Placement
You will work in a motor vehicle garage a minimum of four days per week, attending college one day per week.
You could progress to study a Level 4 in Electric Vehicle Diagnosis and Repair.You may also decide to study for a MOT testing qualification.There are a wide range of job opportunities available in the industry, whether you work as a maintenance technician or develop your own business.
