This course will provide you with a basic understanding of carpentry & joinery and will help you gain the knowledge and skills to prepare you for further study.You will develop skills in wood occupations, producing woodworking joints, maintaining and using carpentry hand tools, and preparing and using portable power tools.

GCSE Grade 2 or above in English and maths

Study Aims
You will gain the essential knowledge and skills needed to work in construction. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment. The study programme is designed to allow you to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter internal and external carpentry and joinery competitions.
Modules Studied
You will study the following: Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction ~ Knowledge of Technical Information ~ Knowledge of Construction Technology ~ Produce Woodworking Joints~ Maintain and use Carpentry Hand Tools ~ Prepare and use Portable Power Tools.
College Assessors will carry out continuous and final assessment for all units.
Times of Delivery
This course will run 2-3 days a week from 8.45am to 5pm - your Maths and English requirements will be additional sessions.

Teaching and Assessment
At the end of each unit, you will answer knowledge based questions. The Level 1 exam will test your knowledge using a multiple-choice format. You will receive a series of practical tasks to carry out prior to your final assignment.

Regular guest speakers and enrichment activities are organised for throughout the year. We will encourage you to enter regional and national competitions, such as the World Skills Show, and will support you throughout your journey.
Placement
At Level 1, you will engage in set sessions that aim to improve your employability skills as part of your personal development session. You will also work alongside the work placement team to secure a work placement in the sector.
