Apprenticeships

This course is free to apprentices. Small companies may need to make a contribution towards training costs, large companies could pay through the apprenticeship levy, if they have funds available

Build the foundations for a successful career in Site Carpentry with a practical apprenticeship programme.

This apprenticeship programme combines on-the-job training in a real working environment with studying at college in our industry standard workshops. You will progress to gain the knowledge, skills behaviours and understanding required to be successful in the sector.

Entry Criteria

You will hold a minimum of GCSE grade 2 in both Maths and English.

You will need an employer who can support and help to provide the evidence required for the Site Carpentry programme.

Additional Costs

You will be required to purchase a pair of safety boots and stationery.

Study Aims

This practical apprenticeship programme will help you take the first steps towards a career in Site Carpentry. You will gain the underpinning knowledge that will enhance the training you will receive on-the-job in a real working environment with your employer.

Modules Studied

Principles of Health & Safety. ~ Construction Technology. ~ Communication in the workplace. ~ Timber Technology. ~ Use of Hand Tools. ~ Use of Power Tools. ~ First Fixing. ~ Second Fixing. ~ Structural Carcassing. ~ Communication in the workplace. ~ Determining resource quantities to carry out work, e.g. quantity of fixings, length of timber, sheet materials. ~ The principles of building, construction terminology and components, such as foundations, roofs, walls, floors, utilities and services, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and environmental and sustainability considerations. ~ How to interpret and produce relevant information from drawings, specifications and work instructions including the basic principles of Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Times of Delivery

1 day in college, 4 days on the job. College day will be set at the start of the course.

Teaching and Assessment

You will learn on-the-job in a real working environment and in our carpentry and joinery workshop, equipped with realistic situations.

You will be assessed using the following methods: [Knowledge questions ~ A portfolio of evidence ~ Practical observation ~ End Point Assessment (EPA).

You will receive excellent support to ensure you progress and reach targets to complete the programme.

End Point Assessment

The final End Point Assessment (EPA) is a three-part assessment that involves a multiple-choice online test, a professional discussion and a practical test.

The multiple-choice online test will cover the theory aspect of the qualification, and the practical test and professional discussion will be carried out under full exam conditions.

We have strong links with local joinery businesses which enables us to continually update our industrial practices so that you are provided with the most enhanced training available.

Tutors attend industry training and spend time back in industry to ensure that current manufacturing practices are being delivered.

Maths and English

If your entry grades do not meet a 4 in both Maths and English you will study towards these subjects whilst on programme.

Placement

80% of an apprenticeship programme is on-the-job training with an employer who will provide practical training to ensure you are prepared with the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed.

20% of an apprenticeship programme involves attending college one day per week for off-the job-training. You will receive theoretical and practical training to complete the joinery standard.

Successful completion of this course will enable the apprentice to apply for membership to the Institute of Carpenters.
