This intermediate course will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to prepare you for further study, or your first steps towards a career in carpentry and joinery. You will develop strong practical skills, an eye for detail, and the ability to follow technical drawings and plans. You will demonstrate sound teamwork skills, and good maths skills.
Entry Criteria
You will hold a Level 1 qualification in Carpentry and Joinery, and will be skilled in carrying out practical tasks.
You will hold a minimum of GCSE grade 2 in both Maths and English, and you will have a keen attitude and interest in Carpentry and Joinery.

Study Aims
You will gain the knowledge and skills required to work within the carpentry and joinery industry. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment. The study programme is designed to allow students to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter internal and external carpentry and joinery competitions.
Modules Studied
Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and Associated Industries ~ Understanding information, quantities and communication with others ~ Understanding construction technology ~ Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools ~ Carry out first fixing operations ~ Carry out second fixing operations ~ Carry out structural carcassing operations ~ Carry out maintenance to non-structural carpentry work.
Times of Delivery
This course will run 2-3 days a week from 8.45am and 5pm - your Maths and English requirements will be additional sessions.

Teaching and Assessment
At the end of each unit, you will answer knowledge based questions. The Level 2 exam will test your knowledge using a multiple-choice format. You will receive a series of practical tasks to carry out prior to your final assignment.

Regular guest speakers and enrichment activities are organised for throughout the year. We encourage our students to enter regional and national competitions, such as the World Skills Show, and will support you throughout your journey.
Placement
You will have the opportunity to gain work experience with a local construction company. In previous years, community projects have been undertaken under the supervision of college staff or in cohesion with a nominated company.
