This interesting course will provide you with an introduction to a wide range of key subject areas within health and social care. You will gain essential skills and knowledge to help you to progress to further study. You will gain an understanding of health and social care as you study areas such as lifespan development, health and social care values, effective communication skill, healthy living and equality and diversity. You will also be able to put what you have learnt into practice through a work placement.
Entry Criteria
You will need 4 GCSEs grade D/3 (or equivalent), including maths or English Language.
You will need a satisfactory DBS check to gain entry on to this programme. The DBS is paid for by the college within the first term.
Additional Costs
Students have the option of purchasing, non-compulsory, items of uniform such as t-shirts (approx. £10), polo-shirts (approx. £10) hoodies (approx. £17.50) and tunics (approx £25) - again all items can be purchased directly from our supplier and posted directly. All students will be asked to contribute £30 to support study costs, which will include programme specific revision and unit guides and any programme trips and visits, to support learning. This money will be paid on commencing the programme.

Study Aims
You will study a range of relevant and sector specific uits, including: Human Lifespan Development ~ Individual Needs in Health and Social Care ~ Communication Skills ~ Healthy Living ~ Equality and Diversity ~ Individual Rights in Health and Social Care. You will also study sector specific units to develop skills relevant to working in Health and Social Care.There is a requirement for all students to attend and successfully complete 35 hours work experience - this element is compulsory and a requirement of the course. GCSE / Functional Skills will also form a compulsory part of your programme of study. Functional Skills are the core elements of English and Math's that will provide learners with essential skills, knowledge and an understanding of how these areas of study operate within the wider context. They are delivered alongside the main programme and are independently assessed through exams.

Students will be required to complete five (5) core and two (2) optional modules; Core modules Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care ~ Human Growth and Development ~ Safeguarding and Protection in Health and Social Care ~ Communication in Health and Care ~ Working in Health and Social Care. Optional modules Creative Activities in Health and Social Care ~ Nutrition for Health and Social Care. - Dementia Awareness - Mental Health and Well-being.

Teaching and Assessment
Assessment is through portfolio which includes a series of assignments as well as completing all your placement requirements. All assessments are internally graded A* to D under the CACHE framework and regulations.
Industry Links
In order to gain a deeper understanding of the health and social care industry, learners will be required to attend placement in a real work environment to support their learning. The minimum required number of placement hours is 35 for the Extended Diploma. We have strong links with a variety of leading employers within this sector. We are fortunate to be able to access this knowledge and experience and not only welcome them into our environment but for us to visit their places of work, including: Day Care Centres ~ Private Residential / Nursing Care ~ Four Seasons Health Care ~ Health Care ~ DACC ~ MIND ~ Innovations ~ Pathways ~ Hospice Care.
Placement
All students are required to attend and complete a 35 hours work based placement. To support this all students are required to have a satisfactory DBS check to gain entry on to this programme. This qualification uses learners' work experience as a focal point and enabling learning to be as active, practical and work-related as possible. A key feature is also the opportunity for learners to produce a personal and professional development portfolio, which links many aspects of their programme to placement.
Progress onto our Level 3 Health and Social Care qualification, or an apprenticeship, at New College Durham. With further study you could prepare for a rewarding career as a care support worker in adult residential settings; healthcare assistant in community, primary care and acute health environments; care support worker in domiciliary services, supported living or day services; or a community-based support worker.
