This course is aimed at professionals working in the housing sector, responsible for the overseeing and management of repairs and maintenance for social housing and their customers.

Programme delivery will follow a 'blended' approach, that is traditional in-person teaching and digital initiatives.

Designed to ensure you are fully compliant with the Social Housing (Regulations) Act 2023, you will be able to benefit from the professional development opportunities offered. The programme meets the full professional requirements of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), meaning you will gain the knowledge and skills relevant and responsive to the needs of employers and customers in this specialist sector.

On successful completion, you become eligible to become a certified practitioner CertCIH.

Entry Criteria

New College recognise that students may have gained the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills from prior experience or learning that will be relevant to this programme of study and fulfill the standard entry requirements. Such admission is discretionary and would normally involve an interview.

Additional Costs

There are no additional course fees as registration with the CIH for the duration of the programme is included.

You will attend a group interview and information event. You will be provided with infiormation, advice and guidance as to whether the programme is suitable for your ability and career goals. On arrival please report to NCD University Centre reception.

Study Aims

This programme aims to provide challenging, stimulating and vocationally relevant content which meets the development needs of housing organisations and professionals. It will help you develop and consolidate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to satisfy housing employers, the standards of the Chartered Institute of Housing and the Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023.

Modules Studied

Professional Practice Skills for Housing - develop the understanding and skills to progress at management level in housing. Learn to relate individual skills and performance to the effectiveness of the organisation and how ethical practice and ethical behaviour relate to professional practice skills.

Financial Management for Repairs and Maintenance - learn about the macro-economic environment and the financial aspects of controlling and monitoring maintenance contracts and budgets.

The Legal Framework for Repairs and Maintenance - be introduced to the legal system and institutions in relation to repairs and maintenance and the contractual responsibilities of landlord and tenant.

Sustainable Repairs and Maintenance - learn about the sustainability standards for housing and how asset management can adopt practices to improve the sustainability of dwellings. Students will also consider how the development of sustainable homes and communities link to healthy communities.

Customer Service in Housing - consider the key aspects of customer service and how to use customer feedback to design, develop and improve a focused, needs led service.

The Delivery of Housing Services - understand the delivery of housing services from a strategic and operational view linking policy to delivery on a national, regional, organisational and individual basis.

The programme will be delivered through a blended approach incorporating in-person teaching and the latest digital teaching techniques and initiatives.

Assessments are designed to enable you to demonstrate your knowledge understanding and skills throughout the duration of the programme. You will be encouraged to meet your full potential. Assessment methods include professional discussions, written report, case study, area profile presentation, and submission of a portfolio. There are no examinations.

New College has links with several housing organisations such as GENTOO, South Tyneside, Bernicia and County Durham Housing Group. Our links provide industry based guest speakers and educational visits to give you a valuable insight into management in a wide range of business sectors.

Placement

There are no formal work placement requirements.

What else?

You will be registered as a member of the CIH for the duration of this course and on completion can become a Certified Practitioner of CIH.
