Take your shot at a career in photography and the creative media industry with our photography pathway that forms part of a two year programme.Studying the first and second year of this course will also prepare you for progression to study a degree level course at New College Durham's University Centre or at university.
Additional Costs
A £30 contribution for trips and materials is expected. Additionally, optional trips may incur an additional cost.
Furthermore, it is recommended that you purchase a 32GB SD card (preferably class 10, 90MB/s), and optionally, a large memory stick or external hard drive, along with over-ear headphones.

Study Aims
This course is for you if you want to start a career in the creative media and photography sector. This two-year programme provides a foundation in core aspects of creative media practice with a close alignment to photography; completion will enable you to progress to an undergraduate course at university. This qualification follows GCSEs and is equivalent to 3 A-Levels. The creative media industry adapts to current needs at an extremely fast pace and our programmes reflect this and are informed by industry to mirror the skill set required.

Teaching and Assessment
You will have access to a wide variety of resources and course related materials in class and via on our online virtual learning environment. Your study programme will include preparation for employment and an expectation to complete relevant work experience and independent study.Teaching will be a variety of classroom based, self-study and workplace learning activities. Assessment is both formative and summative.Formative assessment of learning will be through a range of methods such as peer assessment, self-assessment and tutor assessment including observations, group work, written assignment, oral presentations and projects and aims to support your learning in preparation for summative assessment.Summative assessment is undertaken through assignments assessed internally and moderated by the awarding body.
End Point Assessment
This course is 100% coursework. You will take part in a number of workshops, lectures and presentations. You will also have the opportunity to work with a number of clients on live briefs.

You will also have the opportunity to attend sessions with guest speakers, such as:
- Media practitioners from the BBC and ITV
- Communicorp
- Assistant Directors Association
You will also be encouraged to attend and enter film festivals such as Aesthetica in York and The Royal Television Society Young Peoples' Media Festival in Sunderland.
Maths and English
English and mathematical skills are embedded in all elements of the programme.
Placement
You will be required to complete a work placement of at least 70 hours (approximately 10 days) for each academic year of study. Wherever possible, we ask you to try and source a meaningful placement, however, if this is not possible, we do have limited opportunities sourced through the College. You will be expected to proactively engage with applying for a placement as they become available. All of our placement opportunities will be posted to your online learning system. You will always perform to the best of your ability and conduct yourself in a professional manner as if an employee of your placement organisation.
Refine your skills and progress through levels 4 and 5 with our FdA in Film and Media Production at New College Durham, with the opportunity to then top-up with one final year to a BA (Hons) in Film and Media Enterprise.
