This course provides learners with the relevant skills and knowledge to pursue a career within the sport industry.
You will use our modern gym facilities, and undertake a work placement, to gain a practical understanding of sports coaching and strength and conditioning training.
Entry Criteria
You will hold a minimum of four GCSEs at grade D, including maths and English.

You will meet with a course tutor to find out more about the course, discuss which course is right for you and see the facilities. Please bring your GCSE grades/predicted grades or any other relevant qualifications.
Study Aims
This course aims to provide you with the introductory skills and knowledge to start a career in sport of progress with employment in the sector. It will prepare you for higher or further education, through full-time or part-time study. You will choose a pathway and select units that reflect your career or academic aspirations.
On completion of the course, you will have the skills to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or to progress to higher or further education.
You will gain and develop essential skills that are valued by employers and higher and further education institutions. You will develop knowledge and understanding of the vocational sector.
Modules Studied
Mandatory units:
- Participating in sport
- Sports coaching
- Developing sporting skills and tactical awareness.
Optional units include:
- Strength and conditioning training
- Performance analysis for sport
- Psychology for sports performance
- Plan, deliver and evaluate an activity session.

- Wednesday - 9am - 4pm
- Thursday - 9am - 4pm
- Friday - 9am - 4pm

Teaching and Assessment
You will engage in practical and classroom-based lessons, and will be assessed using the following methods:
- Observation of performance
- Workbooks
- Portfolios
- Written assignments.

Placement
You will be expected to undertake a meaningful work placement within the industry. This is a great opportunity for you to get hands-on experience and develop your skills in a real working environment.
After completing the course you could progress onto the Level 3 Sports courses at New College Durham.
