This advanced apprenticeship is designed to support you to progress within the construction industry.
New College Durham are at the forefront of construction training in the North East. We provide the highest level of education while linking closely with local employers to constantly develop the range and content of the courses we offer.
Successful completion of this course will enable you to apply for membership to the Institute of Carpenters.
Entry Criteria
You will hold grade 3 or above in GCSE maths and English.
You must have completed a Level 2 apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery. You will need an employer who can support and help to provide the evidence required for the Site Carpentry programme.
Full entry criteria can be obtained from the Course Leader.
Additional Costs
You will be required to purchase a pair of safety boots and stationery.

Study Aims
This advanced apprenticeship will provide you with the skills and knowledge to complete practical tasks, such as:
- stair installation
- door hanging
- hipped roofing
- dormer roof construction
Modules Studied
- Analysing technical information, quantities and communication with others
- Analysing the construction industry and built environment
- Erect complex structural carcassing components
- Install and maintain non-structural and structural components
- Set up and operate cutting and shaping machinery.
Teaching and Assessment
You will learn on-the-job in a real working environment and in our carpentry and joionery workshop, equipped with realistic situations and appliances.
You will be assessed throughout the duration of the programme both on campus and at your place of work. These assessments are designed to support you and give additional guidance and support to your progress. You will set targets to help you to make progress.
You will be assessed using the following methods:
- Knowledge questions
- A portfolio of evidence
- Practical observation
- End Point Assessment (EPA).
End Point Assessment
The final assessment for the qualification is an End Point Assessment (EPA) which must be passed to achieve the full qualification. This is a three-part assessment that involves a multiple-choice online test, professional discussion and a practical test.
The multiple-choice online test will cover the theory aspect of the qualification, and the practical test and professional discussion will be carried out under full exam conditions.

We have strong links with local joinery businesses which enables us to continually update our industrial practices so that you are provided with the most enhanced training available.
Tutors attend industrial training and spend time back in industry to ensure that current manufacturing practices are being delivered.
Placement
80% of the apprenticeship programme is on the job training with an employer who will provide practical training to ensure you are prepared with the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed.
20% of the apprenticeship programme involves attending college one day per week for off the job training. You will receive theoretical and practical training to complete the bench joinery standard.
You could progress to a relevant degree level course at New College Durham, such as HNC Construction & the Built Environment.
Alternatively, you could secure employment with your apprenticeship employer, or choose to develop your own business and continue as a self-employed tradesman.
