This course is aimed for people aged 19 years or over.
Get into hairdressing with our practical part-time course to perfect your cutting technique, and master the art of colouring and styling hair so your clients leave feeling and looking fabulous. Working with real life clients, you will gain an insight into a salon environment, and the roles and responsibilities of all staff members, and develop an understanding of the policies and procedures within the hair and beauty industry.
Entry Criteria
You must have a desire to work in the hairdressing industry, and will be required to have the appropriate communication skills.
You will complete various theory and practical skills tests to establish your suitability to the course.

You will have an informal chat with a course tutor. Please bring any relevant qualifications. Attend anytime between 4.30pm and 6.30pm on the advised date.
Study Aims
This part-time hairdressing course aims to provide you with the required theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work in a salon. You will develop your skills in our on-site salon, Halo.You will gain the following skills:
- A variety of cutting skills
- Colouring skills - from full head colours and roots to woven techniques
- Ability to style and dress hair to meet client specification.

- Working in the Industry
- Health and Safety in the Salon
- Client Consultation
- Shampoo and Condition the Hair and Scalp
- Cutting Hair Using Basic Techniques
- Styling and Finishing Hair
- Colouring Women's Hair
Times of Delivery
- Wednesday - 12.30pm-7pm
Any times indicated are based on current courses and may be subject to change in future years. Full timetables will be confirmed at the start of each course.
Teaching and Assessment
You will work with your tutor to learn the relevant practical skills and theory knowledge over the duration of the course for each unit. Practical assessments will be carried out with your tutor once you feel you are ready to be assessed - these assessments will be carried out at various points in the year. You will complete an assignment and/or exam for each unit.You will be required to provide some clients and models throughout the year to work on, so that you can maximise your learning and explore the skills you have been learning.You will cover a minimum of 11 units and will be assessed using practical observations, exams and written assignments.

Placement
There are no requirements to undertake a placement on this course, however it is highly encouraged that you source a salon to gain an insight into the industry and have the opportunity to develop your skills.
You could progress to a relevant Level 3 course or apprenticeship at New College Durham.
