Age 16-18

FREE (If meet residency criteria and not enrolled at another educational institution).

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course will be FREE. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips.

Age 19+

If you are aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course could be free dependant on the level of the course and your eligibility criteria. The level 2 VRQ qualification is intended to prepare you to work within the hairdressing industry. This course will equip you with the basic skills to progress onto level 3 and then into industry and employment. You will develop a range of skills including cutting, colouring and styling and will gain hands on experience working with real clients to develop your skills.

Entry Criteria

4 GCSE grade 3 or above including Maths and English or a level 1 hairdressing qualification. Good communication skills and a desire to work within the industry are required.

Study Aims

This full-time hairdressing course will enable you to gain the knowledge and skills, including:

Any times indicated are based on current courses and may be subject to change in future years. Full timetables will be confirmed at the start of each course.

Teaching and Assessment

You will work with your tutor to learn the relevant practical skills and theory over the duration of the course for each unit. Practical assessments will be carried out with your tutor once you feel you are ready to be assessed, these assessments will be carried out at various points in the year on models or clients. Each unit will also include assignments or multiple choice online exams. You will be required to provide your own clients and models throughout the year so you can practice the skills you have learnt. You will cover a minimum of 11 units and will be assessed using practical observations, exams and written assignments.

Industry Links

Each term you will engage with external employers through lectures and hands on workshops from industry specialists. Our links with industry will ensure you will learn additional skills and improve your confidence levels as you progress at NCD. You will be encouraged to enter competitions, such as WorldSkills and the AHT competition.

Maths and English

Maths and English will be added to your timetable if you do not achieve grade 4 or above. Maths and English will also be embedded into theory and practical sessions.

Placement

You will be required to undertake a work placement within an external salon for a minimum of 70 hours over the duration of the year, to ensure you develop the essential skills to work in this fast paced industry. It is your responsibility to find a work placement, therefore, you can decide whether you want to carry out your placement in a block period of time or one day a week.
