This programme will top-up your foundation degree or HND qualification in a sport related area. It will provide you with a high level of knowledge and practical skills, to prepare you for a successful career in the sport and leisure industry.

You will explore the science behind sport, human movement, and physical activity. You will study the effects of sport on human physiology, psychology, health and wellbeing and reflect upon your own practice.

Entry Criteria

You will hold:

  • A relevant Level 5 qualification in a sport and exercise related subject.
  • A minimum of grade 4 (or equivalent) in GCSE English and maths, or a science.
  • Evidence of interest and experience within a relevant sport and/or exercise field.
  • A successful interview with the programme leader.

What are the next steps?

You will meet with a course tutor who will ask a set of standard questions. On arrival please report to the NCD University Centre reception where you will be met by one of the team.

Study Aims

This programme provides students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment. You will apply your knowledge and understanding in a range of relevant situations that develop transferable skills required for lifelong learning.

The underpinning course objectives are as follows:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of topics in sport and exercise that are directly related to job opportunities in the sector in the North East of England.
  • Evidence the development of professional work related skills including the need to meet ethical issues, health and safety, relevant legislation and professional codes of conduct.
  • Demonstrate analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information that underpin sport and exercise.
  • Demonstrate a range of transferrable employability skills and skills for lifelong learning and use self-reflection, self-appraisal and independent approaches to learning.

Teaching and Assessment

Various strategies are employed to help you to achieve the learning outcomes of the programme. Assessment methods include written reports, portfolios of evidence, practical assessments and poster presentations.

You will be challenged to engage in academic discussion and independent research tasks. Knowledge and understanding will be monitored using formative assessment throughout the modules.

Where applicable, you will use contemporary equipment to apply your knowledge and understanding of coaching, fitness and conditioning, exercise psychology and sports marketing. You will provide justification using an evidence based approach to the design and delivery through your underpinning knowledge of physiology, psychology and coaching and will evaluate these projects.

You will receive peer feedback, and one-to-one tutorials with your course leader.

The programme offers a range of opportunities to develop professional practice in sports coaching, performance analysis, strength and conditioning and health promotion.

Placement

You will be encouraged to engage in work placement opportunities, to develop practical skills in a real working environment.
