FREE (If meet residency criteria and not enrolled at another educational institution).

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course will be FREE. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips.

Age 19+

If you are aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course could be free dependant on the level of the course and your eligibility criteria. This course will provide you with a basic knowledge and understanding of hairdressing. You will develop the essential skills required to perform services, such as creating professional salon looks and washing, styling and colouring all types of hair.You will gain invaluable hands-on experience, and key employability skills, working in our on-site hairdressing salon. This course will give you an insight into the world of hairdressing and work.

No specific grades are needed for this Level 1 in Hairdressing course.

Study Aims

This course aims to provide an introduction to the hair and beauty industry, and will help you develop the skills and knowledge required to work within this sector.

The content has been developed to incorporate both theory and practical sessions, as well as an external hairdressing placement and competition enrichment activities, to enhance your experience.

Modules Studied

The Diploma in Hairdressing and Barbering includes the following mandatory units:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image
  • Shampooing and conditioning
  • Hair plaiting
  • Create an image using colour for the hair and beauty sector
  • Styling women's hair
  • Colour hair using temporary colour

Teaching and Assessment

You will be assessed through:

  • Projects
  • Written tests
  • Practical assessments
  • Observation of your practical performance.
You will be assigned a personal tutor for the duration of your course. You will carry out practical assessments with your tutor once you feel you are ready to be assessed. The assessments will be carried out at various points in the year. Each unit will involve projects and/or internal multiple choice exams. You will be required to provide some clients and models throughout the year to work on, so that you can maximise your learning and explore the skills you have been learning.

Placement

You will take part in dedicated sessions to develop valuable employability skills and will also gain hands-on industry experience from sourcing a work placement within an external hair salon, as well as assisting Level 2 or Level 3 client sessions. Participation in competitions will be encouraged as they will give you the opportunity to develop key employability skills, such as problem solving, time management and working independently.
