This course will prepare you with the technical skills and knowledge required for employment within the beauty industry. You will build on skills learnt at level 2 to prepare you for a more senior role at level 3.
Entry Criteria
Ideally, you will hold an NVQ/VRQ or Level 2 equivalent in beauty therapy. It is essential that you have some experience working in a salon.
Alternatively, it is possible to gain access to the programme if you have adequate experience working in the industry.
All students are required to bring in their GCSE grades during induction and any other qualifications relevant to their chosen career subject. During induction vocational staff will undertake various theory and practical skills tests to establish your dexterity skills, ability to problem solve and follow instructions. Staff will review results from your skills tests, other qualifications and GCSE grades to establish the correct starting point for you. You will then be placed on the correct level to support you through your studies.
Additional Costs
You will be required to purchase a uniform and kit for your course. Information on prices for these items will be shared at your meet the tutor chat.You will need to pay a £5 deposit for a locker.
There will also be multiple opportunities for you to take part in enrichment activities, visits and trips throughout the year - they may include a small fee.

Study Aims
This course aims to provide you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to progress within the salon or spa industry. Designed to build on your interest and passion for the beauty therapy industry, the course will provide you with a progression route whilst preparing you for industry and employment.
You will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of enrichment and work related events throughout the year, to give you an insight into the beauty therapy industry.
Modules Studied
You will complete the following units:
- Monitor and maintain health and safety practices in the salon
- Promote and sell products and services to clients
- Provide body massage
- Client care and communication in beauty related industries
- Provide body massage
- Provide facial electrotherapy treatments
- Provide body electrotherapy treatments
- Provide massage with pre-blended aromatherapy oils
- Provide hot stone massage
- Apply micro-dermabrasion.

- Thursday - 9am - 12pm

Teaching and Assessment
You will be assigned a personal tutor for the duration of your course.
You will carry out practical assessments with your tutor once you feel you are ready to be assessed. The assessments will be carried out at various points in the year. You will work with your tutor to learn the relevant practical skills and theory knowledge over the duration of the course for each unit. Each unit will also have assignments and or internal and external exams for each unit.
You will be required to provide some clients and models throughout the year to work on, so that you can maximise your learning and explore the skills you have been learning.
Industry Links
You will have the opportunity to attend beauty workshops to learn more about the industry and meet employers. Numerous guest speakers and educational trips and visits will also be organised throughout the course.
We have close links with Ramside Hall Spa, Seaham Hall Spa and Bannatynes health spa and work in partnership with online cruise Steiner.
Each term you will engage with external employers through lectures, hands on workshops, role-play interview opportunities, CV development and much more. These opportunities will ensure you will learn additional skills and improve your confidence levels throughout the course.
We encourage all students to enter competitions, such as World skills and the AHT competition.
Maths and English
If you don't hold a Grade 4 or above you will study GCSE English and/or maths.
Placement
You will be required to undertake a work placement within an external salon or spa for a minimum of 70 hours, to ensure you develop the essential skills to work in this fast paced industry. It is your responsibility to find a work placement, therefore, you can decide whether you want to carry out your placement in a block period of time or one day a week. Additionally, you will undertake three hours of work placement in our on-site salon, Halo, supporting further development of employability skills.
