The college is working in partnership with Cleveland Land Services as its main contractor, Dome Project Management, Ryder Architecture and DPP Planning to provide cutting-edge facilities.
The whole project costing in the region of £4.5m, will be a two-stage development, providing huge benefits for both students and the local community. The first stage (due to be completed by December 24th) requires part of the existing car park to be relocated to the edge of the site in preparation for the installation of the new pitch and surrounding amenities. There will still be over 300 parking bays, of which 20 will be dedicated to electric vehicle charging.
The pitch is due to be in place by Easter 2025. The proposed all-weather pitch has been designed to all relevant FA and Sports England standards and will have appropriate floodlighting.
Principal and chief Executive of New College Durham, Andy Broadbent, said: “Working with our partners, we will do as much as possible to minimise our impact on local noise and disruption. However, we ask that during this time of development, due to the heavy construction traffic and building works, please take extra care when on or around campus, and follow all safety instructions for movement around site.”
The facilities will be available for community-hire on evenings and weekends when it is not required by the college or students, and there is already a growing number of interested parties that would like to make use of the facility. A booking process will be announced in the New Year when a completion date for the works is agreed.
